What a working student job is

A Werkstudent (working student) is enrolled at a university and works part-time in a job related to their studies. As long as they work no more than 20 hours a week during the lecture period, working students pay only pension insurance — up to 9.3% of gross pay, less on monthly pay between €603 and €2,000 — while health, nursing-care and unemployment insurance don't apply to the job.

Working-student jobs must pay at least the minimum wage: €13.90 per hour in 2026 and €14.60 in 2027. Many companies pay more, especially in tech.

Rules for non-EU students

If you study on a student residence permit, working-student jobs count toward your limit of 140 full days or 280 half days per year. A day with up to four hours of work counts as a half day. Read our guide on work rules for non-EU students before you sign a contract.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours can a working student work in Germany?

Up to 20 hours a week during the lecture period to keep the working-student status in social insurance. During semester breaks you can work more. Non-EU students must also stay within 140 full or 280 half days per year.

How much does a Werkstudent earn?

At least the minimum wage — €13.90 per hour in 2026. Typical offers are between €14 and €20 per hour, depending on the field and city.

Do working students pay taxes?

Income tax is only due on yearly income above the basic tax-free allowance (Grundfreibetrag, €12,348 in 2026). Tax is often deducted from your monthly salary, but you can get it back with a tax return if your yearly income stays below the allowance.
